Characteristics

Size: This a very large ant. Growing to 1/2 to 3/4 inch in length.

Color: Most common is glossy black sometimes brown is appearance.

Behavior: They live in large colonies either is soil or wood, often extending there colonies under ground. Although formidable in appearance, they do not sting or bite readily. Foods include honeydew, saps, fruits or other insects. Giant Carpenter ants nest in fallen trees and stumps in forested areas.

Habitat: A very common ant in the United States. They will make there nests in your home. Found in sub areas in-between insulation and the sub floor. Tending to gather in highly moist areas beneath bathrooms and kitchens. Most commonly found in your home in areas like wood beams in the ceilings. There nature is to swarm twice a year in the spring and fall. The swarmmers will grow wings and fly to a new habitat like your home, fallen logs, or stumps.

Tips for Control: Wood piles or any type of wood scraps should be moved away from your home. In the central sierra wood piles are commonly stacked right next to the home. These wood piles should be stacked away from the home. Roof leaks should be repaired to prevent moisture from building up. Check for pipe leaks under or around the home, repair if necessary.
